Market Day

Market day

Sea-ribbed from their boat-bellied passage,
Multicolored colts and flickas circle holding pens
Lipping pounded earth for hidden salt, tossing
Tinseled halters with braided tagging collars
Raising voices that claim the world for their own
Wallpaper horse, white, pen, sun, sand

Black Savior

The sand beneath the water
Clouds beneath the tread
Of footsteps yet unseen
By the creature not in bed.

An angel of mercy,
A herald of death,
She held a bleeding starfish
In a fragile Dixie cup.

But trees can’t hold back the morning
Nor rocks hold back the tides
And within this epoch of shadow
A fellow creature dies
