A Better Friend

A Better Friend

Though I did play the fool and laugh
And acquiesce at every turn
Without complaint, but to your back,
Nor protest, while my ire burned,
Though I did out of fear pretend
I could have been a better friend.

Where dangers loomed and faults I’d see,
With opportunity to say,
No opposition rose in me
To counsel you along the way.
Where I was fearful to offend,
I should have been a better friend.

Had I but loved you as I should
And braved to weather your reply
Intent on guiding where I could
Against the warnings in your eye,
Had my heart charity to spend
I would have been a better friend.
